Imam An-Nawawi on Tasawwuf

Imam an-Nawawi (رحمه الله تعالى) said in his work, “al-Maqaasid (المقاصد): The usul (fundamentals) of the tariqa (path) of tasawwuf are five:

1. Taqwa (fear) of Allah privately and publicly
2. Adherence to the sunnah in speech and action
3. Indifference to whether the creation accepts or rejects (you)
4. Being content with Allah in scarcity and abundance
5. Turning to Allah in times of affliction and happiness
