الحَمْدُ لِلهِ وَالصَّلاَةُ وَالسَّلاَمُ عَلَى رَسُوْلِ اللهِ وَعَلَى آلِهِ وَصَحْبِهِ وَمَنْ وَالَاهُ وَبَعْدُ
From Dhu al-Nun al-Misri (Allah sanctify his secret):
I was circumambulating (the Ka’ba) when I heart a sad voice from a woman clinging to the covering of the Ka’ba saying:
“You know oh my beloved… the one I love, You know.
The thinness of the body and tears … reveal/divulge my secret
My dear, I have suppressed love … until my chest is constricted.”
Dhu al-Nun said: what I heard saddened me until I wept and cried. Then she said: “my God and master, by Your Love for me You forgave me.”
That seemed serious to me, so I said: Oh lady, was it not sufficient for you to say: “by my love for You, instead you said by Your Love for me?”
She said “go away, dhu al-Nun. Don’t you know that Allah Mighty and Majestic established His love for them before they love Him? Did you not hear Allah Mighty and Majestic say:
{فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ} المائدة: ٥٤
“Then Allah will bring a people whom He Loves them and they love Him.”
So His love for them preceded their love for Him?
I said: How did you know I was Dhu al-Nun?
She said: “Ya Battaal, the hearts are engrossed in the playing fields of secrets, so I recognized you.” Then she said: “look behind you.” Then I turned my face. Then I didn’t know if the sky plucked her or the Earth swallowed her.
Original Arabic:
عن ذي النون المصري قال: كنت في الطواف فسمعت صوتاً حزيناً وإذا بجارية متعلقة بأستار الكعبة وهي تقول:
أنت تدري يا حبيبي … من حبيبي أنت تدري
ونحول الجسم والدمع … يبوحان بسري
يا عزيزي قد كتمت الحب … حتى ضاق صدري
قال ذو النون: فشجاني ما سمعت حتى انتحبت وبكيت. ثم قالت: إلهي وسيدي ومولاي، بحبك لي إلا ما غفرت لي. قال: فتعاظمني ذلك وقلت: يا جارية أما يكفيك أن تقولي: بحبي لك، حتى تقولي بحبك لي؟ فقالت: إليك عني يا ذا النون، أما علمت أن لله عز وجل قوماً يحبهم قبل أن يحبوه؟ أما سمعت الله عز وجل يقول: {فَسَوْفَ يَأْتِي اللَّهُ بِقَوْمٍ يُحِبُّهُمْ وَيُحِبُّونَهُ} المائدة: ٥٤. فسبقت محبته لهم قبل محبتهم له؟ فقلت: من أين علمت أني ذو النون؟ فقالت: يا بطال جالت القلوب في ميدان الأسرار فعرفتك. ثم قالت: انظر من خلفك. فأدرت وجهي، فلا أدري السماء اقتلعتها أم الأرض ابتلعتها.
