The Disconnected Letters – Tafsir

The following is a very brief summary of what several tafasir say (from Furqan.co) about the disconnected letters ( حُرُوف مُقَطَّعَات‎ ) in the Qur’an.

1) Alif Laam meem = One of the names of Allah
2) One of the names of the Quran
3) Make the mushrikeen listen, get their attention, letters would more likely get attention than just normal words (what are they saying? Curiosity factor)
4) Opening of surah, introduction, etc.
5) Proving our incapability of challenging it, a special trait of this book. Or putting a clear example where there is a mutashabih that we won’t understand, making us humble etc.
6) One of Allah’s oaths
7) Each letter indicates a word. I am Allah who sees, I am Allah the best, etc.
8) Build up the listener, “oh youthful one!” to awaken the mind of the listener.
9) A sign Ahlul kitab was told about the Quran, that it would open up with letters
