The Wali in Surat Yasin

In surat Yasin we find the story of three messengers rejected by their nation, and a man from the far side of the city comes running, telling his nation to follow the messengers. His nation then kills him and God destroys them. We find in tafsir ibn Kathir that this man is mentioned as “His wali.”

We did not send any soldiers from the heavens against his people after his death, nor did We need to.

Ibn kathir: Allah tells us that He took revenge on his people after they had killed him because He, may He be blessed and exalted, was angry with them, for they had disbelieved in His Messengers and killed His close friend (wali).

Allah tells us that He did not send an army of angels, nor did He need to send them, to destroy these people; the matter was simpler than that.

This was the view of Ibn Mas`ud.

Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) said, “Allah said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a wali of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (praying or doing extra deeds besides what is obligatory) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him.”
